Pain Awareness Month: Understanding and Managing Chronic Pain

Pain Awareness Month: Understanding and Managing Chronic Pain
September was Pain Awareness Month, and while that may seem like a strange observance to have on your calendar, it’s actually a very important time to shed light on chronic pain, its impact, and effective strategies for relief. Chronic pain affects millions, disrupting daily life and mental well-being. As chiropractors, we (unfortunately) see firsthand how chronic pain, especially in the back, neck, and joints, can diminish quality of life. But, there’s good news: chiropractic care offers a non-invasive, drug-free solution that targets pain at its root. And I like to talk about it every year because it’s one of the most important and rewarding parts of the profession.

Understanding Chronic Pain

Pain Awareness Month: Understanding and Managing Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is defined as pain lasting more than three months. Common sources include musculoskeletal issues like arthritis, injuries, or spinal misalignments. Unlike acute pain, which signals injury or inflammation, chronic pain often persists even after the original cause is treated, becoming a condition on its own.

The Role of Chiropractic Care in Pain Management

Chiropractic care focuses on aligning the spine and joints, which helps relieve pressure on nerves, reduce inflammation, and restore mobility. Research supports the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments in managing chronic pain, particularly for conditions like lower back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

  • Lower Back Pain: A study in The Journal of Pain found that spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is moderately effective in treating lower back pain, with outcomes comparable to conventional treatments like medication and exercise.
  • Neck Pain: The Annals of Internal Medicine reports that chiropractic adjustments can significantly improve neck pain and are more effective than medications in some cases.
  • Headaches: For tension headaches and migraines, chiropractic adjustments have shown to reduce the frequency and intensity of episodes by addressing spinal misalignment.
In addition to adjustments, chiropractors also focus on lifestyle changes, including posture correction, ergonomic advice, and therapeutic exercises to help prevent pain from recurring. This holistic approach can complement other pain management techniques like physical therapy and acupuncture for better outcomes.

Chiropractic Care: A Safer Alternative to Opioids

Pain Awareness Month: Understanding and Managing Chronic Pain

One of the most important benefits of chiropractic care is that it provides a safer alternative to opioid medications, which are commonly prescribed for chronic pain. With the opioid crisis still impacting many communities, it’s vital to consider non-pharmaceutical options for pain relief. Research published in the *Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine* shows that patients receiving chiropractic care for musculoskeletal pain are significantly less likely to use opioids. By addressing the underlying causes of pain naturally, chiropractic care can help reduce dependency on pain medications and their associated risks.

If you or a loved one is living with chronic pain, consider chiropractic care as a natural, evidence-based method to help manage and alleviate discomfort.

Pain doesn’t have to control your life. This Pain Awareness Month, take the first step towards relief. Let’s work together to get you moving, pain-free.
