Nervous System Overload? Signs You’re Burned Out & How to Reset

Nervous System Overload? Signs You’re Burned Out & How to Reset
Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by your own to-do list.

Burnout is no longer reserved for high-powered executives pulling 80-hour workweeks. These days, it seems like everyone is running on empty — mentally, emotionally, and physically. Whether it’s work stress, caregiving, information overload, or just the constant ding of notifications, our nervous systems are in overdrive. And when the nervous system’s out of whack, everything else follows.

So let’s talk about it. Here’s how to recognize the signs of burnout and what you can do (including how chiropractic care can help) to reset your system.

What Does “Nervous System Overload” Actually Mean?

Your nervous system is your body’s master control center. It regulates everything from breathing and digestion to sleep, focus, and emotional regulation. When you’re constantly stressed, your sympathetic nervous system (aka “fight or flight” mode) can get stuck in the “on” position. This can lead to:

  • Brain fog or trouble focusing
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Muscle tension (especially in your neck, jaw, and upper back)
  • Digestive issues
  • Mood swings or anxiety
  • Physical fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest

In other words: burnout isn’t just in your head — it’s in your nervous system.

According to the World Health Organization, burnout is now recognized as a legitimate occupational phenomenon, defined by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy (WHO, 2019).

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Reset Your Nervous System

At our practice, we see this all the time — patients come in with chronic tension, headaches, fatigue, or even trouble sleeping. And while stress may not be “visible” on an X-ray, it’s very real in how it manifests in the body.

Chiropractic adjustments help regulate the autonomic nervous system, particularly by stimulating the parasympathetic branch — your “rest and digest” mode. Research suggests that spinal adjustments may help reduce sympathetic activity, essentially helping the body shift gears into a calmer state (source).

When your spine is aligned and your nervous system isn’t working overtime to compensate for poor posture or tension, your body can focus on healing — not just surviving.

Lifestyle Habits to Support a Nervous System Reset

Chiropractic care is a powerful tool, but for lasting change, we like to take a 360-degree approach. Here are a few ways to support your nervous system between visits:

Breathwork Is Free Medicine

Simple breathwork practices can help activate the vagus nerve, which plays a major role in calming the nervous system. Try box breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat for 2–3 minutes. Studies show breathwork can reduce cortisol levels and boost your sense of calm (Cleveland Clinic).

Digital Detox = Brain Reset

Our brains weren’t designed to process thousands of micro-decisions a day via emails, texts, and scroll holes. If you’re feeling overstimulated, try:

  • A no-phone hour before bed
  • Moving social media apps off your home screen
  • Scheduling time away from screens — even 15 minutes counts

Too much screen time has been linked to increased anxiety, poor sleep, and even decreased gray matter in areas of the brain responsible for self-regulation (Frontiers in Psychology).

Posture Check: Your Spine’s in the Group Chat Too

Chronic stress = hunched shoulders, tight traps, and forward head posture. And that posture? It can increase feelings of stress and fatigue.

Here’s a quick desk reset:

  • Shoulders back and down
  • Ears over shoulders (not in front of them)
  • Feet flat on the floor
  • Screen at eye level

Fun fact: a slouched posture has been shown to negatively impact mood and energy levels (Health Psychology).

Hydrate Like You Mean It

Your nervous system relies on proper hydration to function. Even mild dehydration can impact cognition and mood. Aim for half your body weight in ounces per day (more if you’re in hot weather or very active).

Bookend Your Day with Ritual, Not Rush

Start and end your day with 5–10 minutes of intentional calm. This could be stretching, journaling, or a walk. Your nervous system thrives on consistency and rhythm.

TL;DR — You’re Not Lazy, You’re Overloaded

Burnout isn’t a character flaw — it’s a physiological state. If you’re dealing with chronic fatigue, tension, and mental fog, your nervous system might be waving a white flag. The good news? You can help it recover.

Chiropractic care can play a key role in shifting your body back into balance, and when paired with daily habits like breathwork, posture awareness, and digital boundaries, you’re giving yourself the best shot at a true reset.
