1. Yoga Was Not Created To Be A Workout

While yoga is an amazing workout, that’s not what it’s all about….it was created to be a WORK-IN!
Dating back more than 5,000 years, it was created as a spiritual exercise in order to maintain a balanced mind and body. It migrated to the West in the 1980’s and has totally mainstreamed, with over 21 million Americans who have become yogis.
While this is SO wonderful, it has now changed to a form of exercise to increase flexibility and lose weight, rather than calming the mind and looking inward.
2. Yoga Is Amazing For Reducing Stress, Improving Posture & Has Many Other Health Related Benefits

The health benefits of yoga are truly endless. Not only is it a great physical workout for losing weight and toning muscle, it also helps improve balance and coordination. This is essential as we start to age, because falls become more common. Additionally, it helps calm the mind, reducing stress and allowing for easier sleep.
One of our favorite benefits is that it strengthens the muscles in the back, improving posture and flexibility.
3. You Don't Have To Be Flexible To Do Yoga

The most common misconception with yoga is that you have to be super flexible and do all these crazy postures, but that is completely false! You don’t have to stand on your head, or contort your body in a weird way. I’ve been practicing for over 10 years and I still cannot perform the posture pictured above, and that’s totally ok!
Yoga is about you and your journey to a healthier mind and body. It’s not about Instagram poses, twisting your body into a pretzel or being the most flexible in the room.
4. Yoga Isn't Just For Weird Hippies

Yoga is sometimes confused with being for hippies but it’s really for all people: men, women, children, old young…everyone! There are SO many different styles, from strenuous to gentle that it’s easy to find the best fit for you.
If you happen to go to your first class and don’t like it, check into what type that it was and try something another!
5. Yoga Is An Inner Practice

Did you know that mirrors were never intended to be in a yoga class? That’s because yoga is about looking inward and calming your mind. The physical postures, or asanas, are just a step to help get to that peace of mind.
Too often we focus all of our attention on the outside world, how we look, what others think about us and how we fit into society. Yoga gives you a chance to push all that aside and focus on the true essence of life, which is self love.
Ready to take your first class? We always recommend to take a few private classes first, especially if you have previous injuries.
