5 Small Ways to Prioritize Your Mental Health

Another year, another Mental Health Awareness Month (that’s May). While the observance doesn’t change, the ways in which we honor it do. In every season of life, and every year of our ever evolving world, mental health - and our experiences - evolve too. In 2022, the world is recovering from a devastating pandemic (that is not fully over, by the way), and dealing with a burnout epidemic as well as a change in the way the world views work.

The pandemic as well as new technology created a shift in the way we work; we work more, we work longer, and we often work from home. Current and recent world events have added stress, and new challenges to the way we maintain our mental health. It’s a hard world out there, and our mental health has suffered because of it. That’s just the hard reality.

So we have less time, more things to worry about, and in many cases less resources to care for ourselves. How can we prioritize our mental health? Here’s the thing; there are always things you can do to prioritize your mental health. Here are just a few small ways you can take action any day:

1. Do One Thing You Like Every Single Day, No Matter What

This is the definition of small. One thing? Every day? It should be easy, right? Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy. In fact, some days it’s really really hard. Between waking up late to catch an extra 15 minutes of sleep, rushing to work, rushing to get the kids or walk the dog, then making sure the dishes are done and dinner is made and catching up on any adulting paperwork or errands you have to do – somehow the day is over and you haven’t done a single thing that’s just for you.

This is not okay.

Do you like training your dog? Knitting? Wood working? Painting? Singing? You DO have 15-20 minutes a day. Wake up 20 minutes earlier. Pack a lunch and take 20 minutes you would have spent driving to do something for you. Set a timer while dinner bakes in the oven. DO that one little thing you like. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t even have to be finished, just do it every day.

2. Take Time Away From Your Phone

Phones can be great, they can keep you connected, give you information you need instantly, get you out of a tight situation, and help you out with everyday life. They can also be incredibly stressful. Late night work texts, social media that makes you feel inadequate, calendar reminders that won’t let you forget how busy tomorrow will be…etc.

Do yourself a favor and take a walk without your phone, design a morning routine that doesn’t include screens, or unwind for the night with your phone in another room. Whatever it is, include intentional time away from your phone in your day and your mental health will thank you.

3. Move Your Body

I don’t just mean “don’t forget to put exercise on your to do list” by this. I mean “don’t forget to intentionally move in a way that brings you peace every day.” This can be anything from a simple 5 minute stretch to start your day in the mornings, an evening walk with your furry best friend, or a lunch time workout to make you feel like you’re sneaking in self care into the work day. Use the body that you were gifted and be thankful for it. After all, you only have one.

4. Connect With Others

Humans are creatures of connection, even us introverts. In our technologically advanced life and our fast-paced culture, it’s easy to forget that our greatest gifts and the most important thing in our lives… are the people around us that love us and make us better. Call your mom. Hug your kid. Tell your hubby you love him and listen to how his day was. Connect in a meaningful way every day, and you’ll feel more grounded and supported.

5. Stick To Your Self Care Appointments

You know how missing that work meeting just isn’t an option? You can’t just not go to your friend’s baby shower, right? Now here’s another question: why is missing a workout you planned for yourself, or your chiropractor appointment you know will make you feel better, or even a haircut that will boost your self esteem and lower your getting ready time totally reschedulable? Why is the thing you planned for you the easiest thing to bail on? This is a fundamental problem. Treat yourself the way you treat your boss/work; as a non negotiable and crucial part of your day.

The reality is that mental health will never stop being important, and it will probably never stop being a struggle. The important thing is that we continue to prioritize it, work on ourselves, and remind ourselves that no matter our situation, no matter our challenges, we matter, and our mental health does too.
